In the winter of 1889, Friedrich Nietzche famously stopped a horse from being beaten by a farmer in Turin, Italy. The incident is believed by some to have triggered the German philosopher’s mental breakdown, but the lives of the horse and its master have remained a mystery. Gorgeously shot in black and white, Béla Tarr’s final film reimagines the farmer’s side of the story and explores what compelled him to attack his horse.
